To Fulfill Unmet Needs: Petition for Direct Flights Between Switzerland and Taiwan

We, the undersigned, call upon the relevant Swiss authorities to approve direct flights between Taiwan and Switzerland. The lack of such a route presents significant challenges for business, tourism, cultural exchange, and family visits, especially as ties between the two sides grow closer and mutual interests continue to expand.

Despite clear demand for direct flights from stakeholders, including the business community, students, and travelers, the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) has not yet deemed public demand sufficient to support the launch of direct flights. We believe this assessment does not adequately reflect the existing and growing demand. A direct flight route would greatly simplify the travel process, foster economic development, and promote cultural exchange, bringing tangible benefits to both sides.

Economic Benefits from Trade

In 2024, the Trade Office of Swiss Industries shared that Taiwan and Switzerland traded a total of 3.1 billion Swiss francs in 2023. Of that, 1.4 billion Swiss francs came from Taiwan’s exports to Switzerland, while Switzerland exported 1.7 billion Swiss francs worth of goods to Taiwan. These numbers highlight the strong economic ties between the two sides, and having direct flights would make it even easier to strengthen this cooperation.

In 2024, Taiwan ranked third among Asian countries for the number of tourists visiting Switzerland, according to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Japan, the UAE, Thailand, and Israel—ranked lower than Taiwan—already have direct flights to Switzerland. This highlights how important it is to establish direct flights between Taiwan and Switzerland to make travel more convenient and give a boost to the tourism industries in both countries.

Launching direct flights to Taiwan could open exciting opportunities for Swiss International Air Lines. By taking advantage of fifth freedom rights, the airline could use Taiwan as a key hub to tap into the Pacific Rim and Southeast Asia markets, boosting revenue along the way. Success stories, like United Airlines expanding its Tokyo to Kaohsiung route and Taiwanese airlines thriving with transfer passengers, highlight the incredible potential of expanded traffic rights. With the new A350 aircraft ready for action, Swiss International Air Lines is perfectly positioned to grow its presence in the Asia-Pacific region, fill more seats, and achieve significant economic gains.

Taiwan’s Semiconductor and AI Industries: Strengthening Connections with Switzerland

Taiwan is a global leader in semiconductor technology, computer chips, and AI industries. Direct flights would make it easier for businesses and academics in both regions to connect, encouraging more collaboration and growth.
